Cape Town Theatre Guide: Plays, Opera, Ballet and Live Shows

A practical guide to Cape Town’s theatres, official show calendars, booking, access and transport, with a checked November 2026–March 2027 programme snapshot.

Cape Town’s live-performance calendar is easier to follow when you think of it as several overlapping scenes. Artscape brings opera, ballet, music and touring productions to the Foreshore; the Baxter’s programme ranges from plays and comedy to concerts in Rondebosch; smaller stages make room for intimate and independent work; and Maynardville turns the summer season into an evening under the trees in Wynberg.

Search Console data for Cape Town Chronicles shows a clear local signal: “Don Giovanni Baxter” appeared 126 times in Google during the reporting period, at an average position of 9.26, even though the performance behind that query had passed. That is a useful clue about what readers want—clear, current information on Cape Town theatre and opera. It is not evidence that the old production is still running. This guide explains how to find the next show, choose a venue and plan a night out, with a short November 2026–March 2027 diary checked against venue and company calendars on 6 November.

Quick plan: Check the venue’s own listing first, follow its official ticket link, and verify the date, start time, age guidance and access arrangements before paying. For an outdoor performance, add weather planning to your checklist. The listings below are a snapshot, not a permanent events calendar.

Start with the kind of performance you want

“Theatre” covers very different evenings. A full opera or musical usually has a longer running time and interval; a studio play, stand-up set or concert can be shorter and more intimate. Ballet and dance depend on movement and music rather than spoken dialogue, while open-air productions add the setting—and the weather—to the experience.

Before buying, read the production description rather than relying on a poster. Look for language, age guidance, content notes, duration and interval information. If a show has a particular theme or uses Afrikaans, isiXhosa or another language, the venue or producer may explain whether it is performed with surtitles or other access support. If the listing is unclear, contact the box office before booking.

For opera and large-scale musicals

Artscape is the first place to check for productions by Cape Town Opera and major musical-theatre runs. Cape Town Opera’s 2026 programme lists Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at Artscape from 18 to 29 November and Oliver! at the Artscape Opera House from 11 December 2026 to 17 January 2027. The company also lists O Holy Night at St George’s Cathedral from 8 to 10 December. Dates and availability can change, so use the company and venue booking pages rather than an old event post.

For plays, comedy and local performance

The Baxter’s mix of main-stage and studio events is worth checking throughout the year. The venue describes its programme as a range of theatre and concert experiences and publishes upcoming events directly. Homecoming Centre’s calendar similarly spans more than one kind of performance; its Star Theatre and Avalon Auditorium are smaller rooms within the District Six venue. A single venue can host productions by different companies, so the producing organisation’s own page may carry extra context about a show.

For ballet and outdoor summer shows

Artscape and Maynardville both appear in the 2026–27 calendars for dance. Maynardville’s announced festival season runs from 13 January to 14 March 2027 and includes ballet, orchestra, jazz, opera and a new staging of Macbeth. An outdoor show has a different rhythm from an indoor performance: check what the organiser says about weather, start times, seating and food before you leave home.

November 2026–March 2027: dates to check

The list below is a short planning snapshot from official venue and company pages checked on 6 November 2026. It is not a complete list of everything happening in the city, and it does not guarantee ticket availability.

Production or season Dates listed Venue Where to confirm
Celestial Bodies (Joburg Ballet x Universe on Stage) 12–15 November 2026 Baxter Theatre Centre Baxter events
Roméo et Juliette (Cape Town Opera) 18–29 November 2026 Artscape Theatre Cape Town Opera
From Hanover Street 24–29 November 2026 Artscape Opera House Artscape events
Oliver! (Pieter Toerien with Cape Town Opera) 11 December 2026–17 January 2027 Artscape Opera House Cape Town Opera

Vienna in the Park (Cape Town Opera) 7 and 14 March 2027 Maynardville Maynardville 2027 programme

Schedules are a moving target. For example, a venue listing can change when a production is postponed, a performance sells out or a company adds a date. Check both the event page and the ticket seller at the moment of booking, and keep the booking confirmation for the performance address and arrival time.

What makes the Baxter worth following

The Baxter is in Rondebosch, close to the University of Cape Town, and has a main theatre, concert hall and studio spaces. The University of Cape Town’s venue history notes that the theatre opened in 1976 and became a platform for multiracial, progressive work during apartheid, when segregation and censorship shaped public life. That history is part of why the Baxter’s programme has a distinct place in Cape Town’s cultural landscape: a night there can be a popular comedy, a new South African play, dance or a concert, rather than one fixed genre.

For practical planning, the Baxter says patrons should arrive before the performance begins; late seating is at the discretion of the front-of-house manager. Secure parking is available beside the theatre and above it on UCT Middle Campus. The venue’s general-information page lists a R10 charge per vehicle during peak evening performances in the main Baxter lot; verify the current amount because parking charges can change. The Baxter asks patrons who need wheelchair seating or other access assistance to contact its Front of House Manager in advance.

Its box office listing gives opening hours Monday to Saturday, 09:00–20:30, and phone bookings Monday to Friday, 09:30–18:00. The venue also says its restaurant and bar are open before performances and during intervals. Treat these as current published details, but confirm on the Baxter website if your visit depends on them.

Planning an Artscape evening

Artscape is on D.F. Malan Street in the Foreshore. Its official event page is useful for comparing what is on across the year, and the official contact page lists the box office and Dial-a-Seat. Artscape warns patrons about fraudulent ticket vendors and says it uses reputable ticket vendors; follow the booking link on the show’s official page instead of buying from an unverified reseller.

For parking, Artscape currently directs patrons to the Cape Town Civic Centre basement parking area, accessed from Jan Smuts Street. The City listing says the facility operates Monday to Friday from 17:00 to 23:00, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays during show times. It lists a R45 fee and card-only payment; patrons may be asked to show proof of a reservation or invitation. The gate closes 15 minutes after a performance start and reopens after the show. Because this is municipal parking information, check the current Artscape notice before your trip.

If access is important, confirm the specific auditorium and seat arrangements with Artscape’s box office. Wheelchair seating and parking arrangements may be venue-specific, and pre-booking assistance is safer than assuming that every seat or entrance offers the same access.

Maynardville: make an outdoor performance an evening plan

Maynardville’s summer festival is staged in Maynardville Park in Wynberg. The 2027 season announcement gives a programme spanning 13 January to 14 March, with Macbeth, ballet, orchestra, jazz and Cape Town Opera dates. The same announcement says secure parking is available at Simon Van der Stel Primary School’s sports field, 150 metres from the entrance, from two hours before showtime; it lists R50 per vehicle, payable by card. Verify details for your specific performance.

Outdoor performance asks a little more of the audience. Check the organiser’s information on weather and what you may bring, dress for a cooler evening than the afternoon forecast, and plan your return journey before the show. The City’s Maynardville Park page gives general park hours, but those are not a substitute for the festival’s ticketed performance schedule.

How to book without missing the details

  1. Start at the venue or producing company. Confirm the date, venue, start time, running time and age restriction there.
  2. Follow its own ticket link. Check that the seller is reached from the official event page, especially for sought-after runs.
  3. Choose seats with your needs in mind. If you need wheelchair access, an aisle seat, hearing support, surtitles or a content note, ask before paying.
  4. Read the small print. Look for late-arrival rules, interval information, refund or exchange terms, and whether children are admitted.
  5. Plan transport around the venue. Artscape, Baxter and Maynardville are in different parts of the metro. Compare the end time with public transport availability and book a return ride if needed.
  6. Recheck the day before. Keep an eye out for schedule changes and save the venue’s contact details.

Follow the arts calendar, not only a single production

The 126 Don Giovanni-related impressions in the Search Console export are a reminder that one production can bring people to a local publication. But a useful theatre resource should continue after closing night. Readers need the next Baxter programme, the next Cape Town Opera season, the summer return of Maynardville, and practical guidance on booking and getting there.

Cape Town Chronicles lists current performances in our events coverage. For a broader outing plan, pair a show with our guide to free things to do in Cape Town. We’ll update the date-sensitive listings in this guide as official programmes change, while keeping venue advice separate from information that can quickly expire.
